Crete Scene Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean. The island is mostly mountainous with a high mountain range crossing from west to east. It includes Crete's highest point, Mount Ida. Although Heraklion is the largest city and the administrative capital, many visitors choose to stay in Chania. Chania is more consistently pretty than Heraklion with its its beautiful architecture and storefronts.

Climate: Crete has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot sunny summers. In summer, it almost never rains with the bulk of the rain occurring from October to March. In winter, from December to mid-March, the temperatures are generally mild, although the wind can feel cold. For its southern location, Crete is less exposed to cold spells than other Greek islands but the temperature at night in winter can sometimes approach freezing. Bad weather can occur in winter, with wind and rain, so the sun is not always guaranteed. From mid-May to mid-September, the Meltemi (or Etesian) blows from the northwest and can make the sea rough. The southern coasts are more sheltered from this wind, especially in the coastal stretches that are located to the south of the mountains. However, the Meltemi has the merit of making the heat more bearable, together with the lighter summer afternoons breezes. During summer, heat waves from Africa can occur, with peaks of 35°C on the coast and 40°C inland. The best time for a beach holiday in Crete is from June to mid-September.
